SEVILLE – Land discovered by Hercules!

Seville is Spain’s fourth largest city and is located in the central South of Spain. It is the capital of the autonomous region of Andalusia. The population of the metropolitan area was 1,493,416 in 2009. Seville, which was founded by the Greek hero, Hercules, is banked on the plain of the river Guadalquivir. As history records, the port of Seville played the main role in trade between Spain and the Americas and till today it remains one of the most active river ports of the Iberian Peninsula. The city has more than a thousand bars where the choice of food, is virtually unlimited, from seafood to ham and sausage and from vegetable to cheese. Climate

Seville has a typical Mediterranean climate throughout the year. Winters are mild. January is the coolest month, with average maximum temperatures of 15.9 °C (61 °F) and minimum of 5.2 °C (41 °F). Summers are blazing hot, with July being the warmest month, with average maximum temperatures of 35.3 °C (96 °F) and minimum temperatures of 19.4 °C (67 °F) and every year the temperature exceeds 40 °C (104 °F) on several occasions. December is the wettest month, with an average rainfall of 95 millimeters (4 in).

Places to visit

Cathedral, Giralda, Torre de Oro, Alcázar, Plaza de España, Antigua Fábrica de Tabacos, Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza – Seville’s Bullring and Archivo de Indias are the places one cannot afford to miss in Seville. Barrio de la Santa Cruz, The María Luisa Park, The Andalusian Contemporary Art Center, The Army Museum, The Maritime Museum, The Carriages Museum, Isla Magica, Alhambra Palace, Donana National Park are the other places one can visit. Head to Plaza Nueva then wander along Calles Sierpes, Tetuán and Velázquez where you’ll find many fashionable locals strolling around. Some are shopping, many are just window shopping and the rest are heading for a bar or café where they can spend their time people watching.

Airport

San Pablo Airport is ten kilometers north-east of the Sevillian capital between the city limits of Seville and Rinconada. Seville Airport is on the A4 motorway (known as E05 in the International E-road network) which connects Seville with Madrid. The motorways around Seville provide an easy access to Jerez, Malaga, Cadiz, Huelva and into Portugal. Half-hourly buses are available to the centre of Seville, stopping at Santa Justa railway station and Puerta de Jerez, which take about 40 minutes. Auriga crown, AVIS, Europcar, Hertz, National Atesa are the companies which proved cars for hire purpose at the airport.

Transport

Orange or Red colored city buses are the prominent public transportation. Travelling by bus is comparatively cheaper than by train. The first section has recently opened for the Metro Centro, the above ground train which runs from Plaza Nueva to the Prado de San Sebastian. The system works on the same ticket system as the city buses. The best is to hire a car and move around with convenience.
